3rd Gear Clutch Pack Replacement

Postby BoiseGTP » Tue Feb 15, 2011 2:11 am

I have a fully built transmission that came out of the 99 Regal that I picked up. 3rd gear is out and I'm getting ready to replace the clutch pack. Any suggestions on with set of clutches to put in there? The zpac or what? Keep in mind that this transmission will probably be used for a high power set up and I'll want something that will last a little longer than what was in there.

If third is totally gone, I've heard it can be the clutches or the sprag. When you get the input/3rd clutch pack out, the sprag is located inside all those clutches. Ensure it works like a one way bearing.

On the clutches, IIRC from a recent convo with Dave at TEP. He suggested Borg high energy clutch plates in a high power build over Zpak. Then adding in another couple of steels or something to gap the clutches and keep them from having excessive play. May be worth giving him a call.
