rough idle when started cold

Postby Toddster » Sat Nov 15, 2008 4:23 pm

Hi again,

On my 96 SSEi

I've noticed that since it has been getting colder out the idle is really starting to get rough when I first start it up in the mornings. Makes the dash board vibrate and seems like the motor is shaking.
It clears up after it is good and warmed up.

Have also noticed my gas mileage has gone down, but has gone down since I don't drive the car much any more and since the winter blend gas has hit the gas stations.
Only getting about 130 to 150 miles on the first half of the gas gauge.

New NGK TR-55V's plugs and new wires Belden brand

Throwing no codes
No engine light on
Not missing
All the power I want
No vacuum leaks

On days when it is about 40 degrees and higher it runs very smooth at start up.

I'm running with a gutted air box and a K&N drop in.

Thanks,
Todd

bad gas mileage is due to ethanol they put in the gas now since its getting colder to your gas in the tank from freezing. next time you get gas look on the pump, it should say up to 10% ethanol added. its basically gets drank like water. everybody's mpg goes down this time of year

idk about the rough idle though

10% ethanol is year round most places now, the winter blend has mroe additives, but they are not ethanol

ethanol lowers the polution levels, and is the [Shazzzbut] apparently. that's used year round in a lot of states now. (MN anyways) but ethanol doesnt significantly change the freezing level (the reason for winter gas) so the antifreeze components take up space, but do not burn. Which, of course reduces mileage

I knew about the ethanol....

just wondered if that was making my motor run rough at cold start up.

I was thinking of putting the old plain paper filter back in for the winter so there is not so much cold air going through the intake to hopefully off set the rough cold idle....

Hmm I was having an issue with Idle and it ended up being my IAC. I changed that out and it works fine now. Two philips screws and remove to inspect/clean

For the SC gauge, if your heat/AC is on, you will see a little fluxuation as the engine is slightly under load and raises the RPM a little which makes the gauge go up a little.

:stupid IAC which is one of those TB sensors. Try taking it out and cleaning it along with the MAF sensor. Between the two you will probably notice a big difference in idle and also MPG. Mine worked for a little while with a cleaning, but then I just put in the extra $40-50 and bought a new one and then no more problem for me.

Thanks...I'll be cleaning or replacing the IAC this weekend. I have cleaned the MAF sensor a week ago.

Just sucks that to get at the bottom screw of the IAC sensor you have to take the thermostat housing off.

oh well..take the good with the bad I guess

I never had to do that. Wierd. You could just take the TB off as well. Less mess. The IAC sensor is the top one, The bottom one is the TPS. Unless they are different on a 96. Not that familiar with them if it is a series I. If it is series II it is the top one and should be easily removed.

Uh..Todd if your thermo housing is in the way, that would be the wrong sensor.
