Taking out an engine with the torque converter attached

Postby BillBoost37 » Tue Mar 09, 2010 2:58 pm

In a 96-99 body style it's possible. Not easy and you'll need to pull out a large tub of lube and be creative. We have proved it's possible though.

The harmonic balancer is 1/8" too large to slide between the subframe and body. If you jack the car and loosen the subframe bolts a little, you get that room. Then pry while someone jacks the motor.

While it's possible...I'm not suggesting anyone try it soon. Just an FYI from your local nutcase.

Like with anything in life, I try to learn more as I go. Something whispered that if I split the trans and engine I could probably get the TC bolts. Nope. Not even close. Then the TC is off the shafts and there's no way to get it back together and pull the trans with it. We were kinda committed to making it work.

Found a way and went with it. She's driving the car, so we got lucky. I didn't tell Rachael how the input shaft and pump don't like pressures applied to them. Mighta made her nervous. -

well, the trans seems to be fine... the only problem is a leak near the cooler that was there long before. so good job bill, that was one of the things about the swap i knew i couldn't have done without you :D
